Interestingly enough, the spinning wait symbol seems to be derivative of the accessing disk cursor from the NeXTStep OS that was developed by Steve Job’s company after he left apple. The accessing disk cursor looked like a hard drive disk or cd disk and would be used when the OS was accessing a disk. This cursor was used in early versions of OSX. And didn’t become the cursor we know today until 10.2 in 2002.
